Tomorrow’s Change Makers

Chartered by Congress in 1893, American University answered George Washington’s call for a national university in the country’s capital. From the first instruction to 28 students in 1914 to the more than 14,000 students today, AU has stayed true to its foundation: to train public servants for the future.

Known for its groundbreaking spirit and focus on experiential learning, global leadership, and public service, American University was founded by John Fletcher Hurst, a respected Methodist bishop, on land rich with Washington history: where Ward Circle and the Katzen Arts Center now stand, Abraham Lincoln once visited troops at Fort Gaines.

If you’re looking for a university that makes a difference in the lives of its students, the larger community, and the rest of the world, checking it out, or just visiting, Hotel Madera is a great place to come home to.
