Consider this your invitation to take a detour. Destination? Adams Morgan, one of DC's most eclectic corners. A short trip from Hotel Madera in Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan offers a different side of Washington, DC. It’s a medley of colorful row houses, independent shops, international restaurants, and a nightlife scene that rarely calls it an early night.

Whether you're heading over for an afternoon or staying out well past dinner, here are the best things to do in Adams Morgan, DC's most personality-packed neighborhood.

First Stop: 18th Street

If Adams Morgan has a main character, it's 18th Street NW. This busy stretch is home to neighborhood restaurants, vintage shops, bars, cafés and some of the most recognizable street art in the city.

Start at the intersection of 18th Street and Columbia Road, where lively storefronts and independent shops make it easy to spend an afternoon wandering. Pop into Lost City Books for your next read, flip through records at Smash! Records, or browse vintage finds at Mercedes Bien.

And don't be afraid to wander beyond the main stretch. The surrounding side streets have plenty of personality of their own, with beautiful facades, tucked-away corners, and a few surprises along the way.

Come Hungry. Leave Happy.

One of the best things about Adams Morgan? Its food scene is just as eclectic as the neighborhood itself, with flavors from around the world packed into just a few blocks.

Start with Lapis, a colorful, intimate spot serving Afghan cuisine rooted in family recipes. For another longtime neighborhood favorite, Mama Ayesha's brings traditional Middle Eastern dishes to the table, along with its famous exterior mural featuring U.S. presidents.

If you’re craving something a little more casual, Federalist Pig has you covered with gourmand barbecue, smoked meats and classic sides included.

And that's only scratching the surface. With so many restaurants in Northwest DC to choose from, you can always find another menu to dive into.

Look Up & Around: Hidden Gems

There's more to Adams Morgan than its bustling main streets. Venture a few blocks off 18th St and find a quieter side of the neighborhood, where Victorian-era row houses, ornate brickwork, and grand bay windows tell stories of DC's past.

And if you're up for a detour, the Spanish Steps in nearby Kalorama are worth seeking out. Inspired by the famous staircase in Rome, this tucked-away landmark connects two residential streets and offers a surprisingly peaceful escape from the city below. It's one of those spots you might never stumble upon without knowing to look for it.

After Dark? Even Better.

If you thought Adams Morgan had personality during the day, wait until the sun goes down. The neighborhood has long been one of DC's favorite destinations for live music, comedy and late-night entertainment. Madam's Organ Blues Bar is practically an institution, with its unmistakable mural and thrilling live performances.

Prefer your evening with a few laughs? Hotbed brings stand-up comedy to the neighborhood, with a lineup of performances that makes for a fun alternative to another night at the bar.

Or skip the itinerary altogether and see where the night takes you. Between the music venues, cocktail bars and late-night bites, there's no shortage of ways to keep your Adams Morgan adventure going.
