Forget the Flowers: 5 Unexpected Valentine’s Day Ideas in D.C.
Valentine’s Day in Washington can be anything you want it to be. And at Hotel Madera, we like to think of love in all its forms: a toast with friends, a creative night out, a cozy solo escape with room service and your favorite Meg Ryan flick. But if you're craving something a little unexpected this year, something with a bit of spark, we’ve got ideas.
Whether you're coupled up, flying solo, or celebrating with your favorite people, here are five ways to experience D.C. this Valentine’s season, Madera-style.
1. Valentine’s Mixology Class at Firefly
Romance doesn’t have to be red velvet and piano ballads. Join us at Firefly on February 10 from 6 to 7 PM for a one-hour, hands-on mixology class designed for lovers, friends, and anyone hoping to impress a future date. You'll learn to craft three flirty cocktails, with shades of pink and hints of citrus, under the guidance of our head mixologist.
It’s less about mastering technique and more about play. About watching your plus-one try to remember if it’s the shake or the stir that comes first. And when the night ends, you’ll walk away with a few new recipes, a new go-to drink, and maybe the story of how your martini shaker nearly took flight across the bar.
This Valentine’s class is sold out, but Firefly mixology classes are part of a limited-seating monthly series. Check back soon for new dates.
2. Curtains Up, Hearts Open
Call it romantic, or just a really good night out. There’s something about seeing a live show that brings you closer. Theater, music, comedy. Pick your vibe and lean in.
From famed houses to boundary-pushing stages, D.C. has no shortage of spaces where live theater feels close enough to touch. Arena Stage surrounds you—literally—with a circular setup that puts the audience inside the story. Meanwhile, Ford’s Theatre carries its history in its walls. Since its restoration in the 1960s, it’s been a stage for classic American musicals and plays. A unique locale for those who like their romance served with a side of history.
Looking for something with a little more bop? The 9:30 Club always delivers: great acoustics, a standing-room floor, and no bad spot in the house.
And if your love language is laughter, there’s a table waiting at DC Improv. You’ll leave with inside jokes, an ache in your cheeks, and that easy feeling that comes from laughing next to someone who gets it.
3. Love at First Brushstroke
A museum date is more intimate than you’d think.
The National Gallery of Art gives you marble grandeur, sculpture gardens, and rooms that shift from still-life calm to walls loud with color. The Hirshhorn pulls you even closer, presenting an evolving lineup of contemporary multimedia works. Check out a painting by the famously elusive Banksy (without needing to hop the pond), or crouch low and take in Laurie Anderson’s wall-to-floor splash of stories, song lyrics, jokes, and commentary on current events. Here, even the escalators are their own exhibits, honoring the museum’s commitment to immersive art.
And then there’s The Phillips Collection, tucked into a row of brownstones just blocks from our hotel. Inside, it still feels like a home. Wood floors, tight corners, and rooms filled with Rothkos, O’Keeffes, and a Renoir you might find yourself circling back to.
4. Union Market: Flirtation by Food Stall
If your ideal date starts with good coffee and ends with sauce on your sleeve, this one’s for you. At Eastern Market, musicians tuck themselves into corners while jazz notes float past stalls that are stacked with produce and hand-made quilts. Weave through longtime vendors and new local makers, picking up a scoop of ice cream here, a bouquet of flowers there.
Then take the Red Line to Union Market and follow your nose. This is where romance gets messy. Where oysters come with a dash of chili oil and strangers bond over bite-sized Venezuelan arepas. If Valentine’s Day gives you reservation-anxiety (and, let’s be honest, you prefer an incoherent spread of your favorite tapas anyway), this one’s for you.
5. A Stroll, A Spin, A Little Stillness
While we wouldn’t call February in D.C. flip-flop weather, bundling up and venturing outdoors makes for inarguable coziness. Just the two of you and the wind in the trees.
Visit the National Arboretum, where columns rise out of an open field like ruins from a dream. While there, explore the season’s evergreen collection, warm up inside at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum (located on the arboretum’s grounds), and see if you can spot early, budding cherry blossoms. It's romantic in that quiet, don't-need-to-say-much kind of way.
Later, make your way downtown to the National Gallery Sculpture Garden and snap a pic in front of the famous AMOR sculpture. And if your boots aren’t meant for walking? Trade them for blades. The Sculpture Garden Ice Rink rents out skates and even offers private lessons. Talk about a date worthy of a rom-com.
Let Us Handle the Holiday
After a day-date of exploring the city, surprise your person with a room set up for a romantic night in: a bottle of sparkling wine on ice, chocolate-dipped strawberries, fresh roses. The Romance at Madera package tends to the details, while the next day’s late checkout gives you extra time to sleep in, wake slowly, and soak in the holiday.
This year, give your someone a little something unexpected. Pack your flirtiest fit, reserve your stay, and we’ll take care of the rest.
